11 Model UN Members Win Awards at U. of Chicago Conference
Eleven students won awards at last weekend’s 27th annual Model United Nations of the University of Chicago.
The conference featured 26 committees in which students simulated decision-making bodies. Most SHS students represented the countries of Gabon or Laos, while others represented a specific individual in a crisis-oriented committee.
Patrick DeMichele and Teddy Coburn received an Outstanding Delegate award for their joint representation of Gabon in the African Union. Amanda Loutris and Annie Lu also received an Outstanding Delegation award for their joint representation of Laos in the UN Legal Committee. Seven other students received verbal commendations: Karen Whisler (Small Business Administrator Eugene Foley in the 1963 Cabinet of the President of the United States), Olivia Nye (James Tomkins in the International Olympic Committee), Alexandra Greulich (The Singapore Times in the Press Corps), Anita Fang and Jessica Shen (jointly as Laos in the UN Environment Programme), and Natalie Wu and Aileen Lee (jointly as Laos in the International Atomic Energy Agency).
About 3,000 high school students took part in the four-day event at the Palmer House in Chicago. Stevenson brought 36 students.
Senior Named Regional Finalist in Scholarship Program
Senior Allen Wang has been named one of 250 regional finalists in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program, and soon will learn if he is one of 150 students selected to receive a $20,000 scholarship to the college of their choice. More than 102,000 students applied for the program, with only 2,200 selected as semifinalists in December. At a minimum, Wang will receive a $1,000 educational stipend.

Girls Basketball
Antioch 68, Stevenson 54: The visiting Sequoits (26-3) won their first North Suburban Conference championship and snapped the Patriots’ 7-game winning streak. Antioch fell behind 8-2 in the early moments of the game, then took control, building a 40-27 lead by halftime. Sophia Way led SHS (25-4) with 16 points and also grabbed 5 rebounds. Ashley Richardson and Skylar Blackstock each scored 14 points. Boys Ice Hockey Team Hosts SHL Playoff Game Tonight
The boys ice hockey team continues its Scholastic Hockey League playoff series against Glenbrook North tonight with an 8:30 showdown at Twin Rinks. SHS, the No. 7 seed, trails second-seeded GNB 1-0 in the best-of-three series. Jake Cimarusti tied for the fifth-leading scorer in the league this season, with 16 goals and 11 assists in 24 games.
Wrestlers Prepare for Sectional Tournament
Seven members of the varsity wrestling team will head to Barrington for the Illinois High School Association Class 3A Individual Sectional, which begins Friday and concludes Saturday. Sectional champions Tyler Harrington (182 pounds, 33-2 record) and Nick Grujanac (285, 26-7) are Stevenson’s seeded wrestlers, and have first-round byes. The other Patriot entries are Zach Horwitz (195, 26-6), Corey Weil (145, 18-14), Evan Rodriguez (138, 26-12), Nathan Reinsdorf (132, 22-16) and Eric Carter (120, 28-12). Patriot Aquatic Club Tryouts February 17-18
The Patriot Aquatic Club will hold tryouts for the spring-summer season on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Patriot Natatorium. Tryouts will run from 6:30-7:30 p.m. each night. Swimmers will try out in the order in which they arrive. Swimmers will swim a minimum 25 yards of freestyle and backstroke. They will be expected to bring a suit and goggles, and for girls only, a swim cap. Dance Placement Auditions Today
Current SHS students interested in taking a curricular dance class, and who have dance experience, should come to the placement auditions today to be placed in the correct class for the 2015-16 school year. Please come to Room 2010 during your PE class or any free period throughout the day.
Fashion Show Information Meeting This Afternoon
An informational meeting for those interested in volunteering or modeling for the Fashion Show will be held today in Room 1612 (the Clothing Lab) from 3:30-4:15 p.m. Anyone interested in modeling, working backstage, doing hair and makeup, hospitality and more should attend. The Fashion Show will take place Friday, April 10 at 7 p.m. in the PAC. Time responsibilities will vary based on roles.
Relay for Life Purple T-Shirts for Sale
Relay for Life is selling purple T-shirts to raise money for the fight against cancer, and for the “purple out” for Friday night’s varsity boys basketball game against Mundelein. Shirts will be available during lunch periods today and Friday. The cost is $8.
Visiting Artist to Speak With Students Friday
The Art Department’s Visiting Artist of the Month, Long Grove photographer Tobin Fraley, will visit SHS during periods 6 and 7 on Friday to talk about his work and his career. His presentation will take place at the Visiting Artist Gallery on the first floor of the West Building.
Buy a Candle for Your Valentine
The Bright Lights Candle Company, created by Stevenson students, will be selling candles in front of the Performing Arts Center during all lunch periods today. Candles are $8 for small and $4 for votives. All the candles are scented for Valentine’s Day: red hot cinnamon, lavender, vanilla bean, rose petal, sweet pea, and apple cinnamon.
AP Exam Registration Underway
Registration for Advanced Placement exams has started. Registration is done online. You can find the registration link and other AP exam information on the AP web page. If you have questions, stop by Room 6000.
Help Outfit Underprivileged Girls for Their Prom
The Student Council will be collecting dresses, shoes, jewelry and accessories to donate to underprivileged girls in the Chicagoland area through the Glass Slipper Project. Items will be collected starting Tuesday and continuing through March 6 in the Student Activities Office. For students who turn in dresses, please attach a note with your name and ID number. Student Council will give one Ugive hour per dress up to a maximum of three hours to those students who donate.
Sign Up for Next Month’s NHS Blood Drive
Will your heart still be pumping from Valentine’s Day? Don’t bypass a good opportunity, and participate in National Honor Society’s spring blood drive on Friday, March 6. Online registration is now available at www.stevensonblooddrive.wikispaces.com. The blood drive will take place in the Wrestling Room during all lunch, gym and free periods. You will be required to submit a health form available on the blood drive website, and a permission form in order miss any gym classes. Donate blood this spring — you’re somebody’s type! You must be 17 or older, and above 115 pounds to donate.
Feeling Stressed? Let Operation Snowball Recharge You
All students are invited to take part in Operation Snowball. In a school of nearly 4,000 it’s easy to get lost. Operation Snowball is a stress-free, weekend-long trip where students will have the opportunity to meet new people and it’s a great time for students to discover the community they go to school with. Operation Snowball is March 13-15. Students leave Friday after school and return on Sunday morning. Sign-up forms can be found in Rooms 7080 and 2628, Student Activities, and the Patriot Superstore. Forms are due by March 4.
Seniors: Looking for financial support for a two- or four-year college education? The Local Scholarships Packet is available for pick up in the College/Career Center, Room 1123.
